xfce Window Manager Failure After Upgrading Xubuntu 16.04 to 16.10

I upgraded my Xubuntu 16.04 VM to 16.10 today; upon rebooting, when XFCE started, there was no window manager and no XFCE Panel!

I opened a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T and the following fixed the problem:

rm -r .Xdefaults .xinputrc .gnome* .cache/
sudo reboot

If you know which one of the files/folders likely caused the problem please get in touch and I will update this post.
